Chapter Twenty-Six
Serena
When Dylan walked into that conference room, I thought blood was about to be shed. He didn't have to say anything for me to know that something had pissed him off. The anger was rolling off him in waves. To be honest he scared me a little, I've never seen him look the way he did, his eyes were black. If I looked hard enough, I could see him visibly shaking, but what and who had caused him to be that angry is still a mystery to me.
In that moment I wanted nothing more than to go to him. To take him in my arms and make sure he was okay, but I couldn't. It would just have confirmed Steve’s suspicions. Dylan doesn't know about the showdown between me and Steve before he entered the room. Yet his glare was set on Steve the moment his eyes landed on him.
Mmm interesting.
I'm still shocked at Steve's accusation and I'm trying my damned hardest to hold back the tears.
Were we that obvious? I kept myself poised the entire time I thought.
Going back into Dylan's office to find out the outcome of our presentations, I keep my head held high. If I lose, then so be it. I know deep in my gut that I did my best work and that Steve only won because of his connections, not through hard graft.
Twinning my fingers together in my lap, my sign that I’m a nervous wreck on the inside, but don’t want anyone to know it. Dylan starts talking about how we both gave brilliant pitches and how we yet again impressed him. It’s nothing he didn’t say before, but we both sit there and let him get on with it. I glance at Steve and the smug look he’s wearing on his face. the one that tells me he thinks he’s got this in the bag. He probably has, that is until Dylan waffles on some more and announces that he’s giving me the contract.
When he says my name, I’m utterly gobsmacked. Then like I’ve had a bucket of cold water tipped over me I freeze, my insecurities rearing their ugly head.
Did he give it me because I’m actually good at what I do or because I’ve let him fuck me?
My thoughts are halted when the devastating look on Steve's face has me laughing on the inside. He never did like to lose.
Wanker.
Handing me an envelope with my name on it, I take it in one hand as Dylan congratulates me, a cheesy smile a mile widespread across his face.
Giving Steve the brush off and some loser speech, Steve finally bogs off, sulking as he goes.
Again, I do another little happy dance to myself.
I won, I fucking won.
Silence descends around the room when it’s just me and Dylan, only I can’t keep quiet.
Voicing my shock to him about winning, he reassures me that I won it fair and square. Which slightly puts my mind at rest.
Coming close to nearly telling him to fuck me in his office again, I make my excuses before thanking him.
